Win a trip to the USVI

A quick lesson in blogger relations before I give you the goodies. Say you are a PR person and you want to inform a blogger about a contest to win a trip. Don’t copy all the contest details and then paste them into the comments section of a blog. Instead, maybe write a quick note  about the contest and email it to the blogger. That way is so much more personal and the blogger will appreciate it. If they are interested they will write about it or tuck it away in their pocket for a rainy day topic (a quick shout out to Amy K. for always getting this right!).

On that note, here is an excellent opportunity to win a trip to the U.S.V.I – your choice of St. Croix, St. John, or St. Thomas for six nights courteous of Johnson and Johnson.

Learning to Scuba

padi_logoThis past weekend Travis and I started our Scuba certification through Tropical Penguin. Saturday was spent in the classroom going over the basics and Sunday we spent four hours in the pool going over a variety of Scuba skills. For the most part, I had a good time, but I’m struggling to figure out the mask clearing thing. Every time we have to do anything that require my mask not to be on my face I stop breathing and convince myslef that I am drowning. I burst to the surface like a humpback whale until I figure out that I actually still have the regulator in my mouth and am perfectly fine. This week I will be practicing in the shower and our condo’s pool. I really want to get this skill down and the perfectionist in me can’t stand that I am the only one in the class who is having a problem with it.

One of the fun things about the class that I hadn’t expected was what a bonding experience this was for Travis and I. There is something about learning a new skill that is so much fun and with Scuba you are really dependent on your dive buddy. For instance, one of the things we had to practice was a scenario where we had to pretend that one of us was out of air. We had to communicate completely through hand signals, take one regulator out of our mouth and then get the spare regulator from our partner. It really took some team work.

We have one more weekend of Scuba training and then we do our first dive in Lake Tahoe the following weekend. Now that we’ve been in the pool, I’m really excited to try out our new skills in the open water.

Scuba is one thing that we are really looking forward to doing when we are on St. Croix for our wedding and on our honeymoon (wherever that may be).

I’ll keep you posted and let you know as we continue our training!

Cindy, my wedding planner, asked me to put together my wedding likes and dislikes. Since I’m a visual person this was the result of the likes challenge:

Of course, no one does Inspiration Boards quite like Style Me Pretty.

St. Croix Villa – Sugar Bay House

We got a villa! We got a villa!

Pool at the Sugar Bay House

After a lot of debate and countless hours spent perusing the internet for a villa we found one that is available for the week before our wedding. Sugar Bay House is in Columbus Landing on St. Croix and it is awesome! We booked it through and got a discount through our wedding planner.

A couple of weeks ago we attempted to book the Sea Glass Villa, but the morning we made the reservation, we got a call from the realtor saying that someone had booked the villa a few hours earlier than us. Ouch!!! After that disappointment I wasn’t sure any villa would measure up.

Choosing between a villa, hotel, or condo was an interesting process. Did we want the privacy of our own place where we could BBQ or swim anytime we wanted? Did we want to be close to town and our other wedding guests? Did we want a combination of all of those?

When it came down to it, Travis really preferred the idea of a villa. I had a harder time with the decision, but after the Tuesday convo with the wedding planner,  I realized that having a villa gives us the opportunity to host drinks or a BBQ and the chance to escape from it all when we need to. And this villa sure as heck beats the pants off Sea Glass (ok Sea Glass would have been awesome too, no offense Sea Glass).

If you are coming to our wedding and are interested in renting a villa give Cindy, our wedding planner, a shout. She will hook you up with great recommendations for a villa or condo. And if you go through her you get the discount too! You can find her contact info here.
