Matrimony Monday

Today is known as Matrimony Monday because 35-40% of engagements happen at this time of year in the U.S. and the newly engaged jump online to start planning.

Last year, I nervously went to work where I flashed my new bling to my work friends and had a completely distracted day at the office. Truth be told, I didn’t do any work that day. Instead, I tested the limits of the internet filter and called friends and family to share the news that I was engaged. I’m pretty sure my office mate was not happy with me.

To reward new brides-to-be, OneWed is hosting the ultimate giveaway for one lucky future bride: the “Off-the-Chart” Wedding Giveaway, with nearly $15,000 worth of wedding day essentials. Couples can enter simply by creating their own Wedding Pre-Party ( and inviting friends and family to join.  For every invitation successfully accepted by a guest, the couple receives an additional entry to win.

That’s a lot of money folks! I created a page on and it is a fun way of organizing your wedding info and giving your guests the opportunity to “meet” before the wedding. Good luck!

One Year Ago…

Travis asked me to be his wife. I can hardly believe that we are now 6 months out from our wedding. At times, this year has drug out, as I’ve anxiously waited for our wedding day.

Happy Engagement Anniversary Trav!

I’m not sure I would recommend a long engagement. It has been a real test of my patience. The best thing about being engaged this long is that we have had plenty of time to make decisions, do research, and prepare for our marriage. Having extra time to focus on our upcoming marriage and not just the wedding day has really been a blessing in disguise. I feel more ready to be a wife than I did a year ago. I’ve come to have a deeper understanding of marriage and love.

From a planning perspective, I’m fairly certain that I could have whipped this wedding out within 6 months. Easy peesy. No problemo.

Lots to do in the next six months! Next on the agenda is ordering the invites, buying Travis’s suit, figuring out bridesmaid dresses, and finalizing the menu for the reception. Whew! Here we go!

Engagement Photos

Last month we braved the cold and headed out to get our engagement photos done. Some may wonder why, when you’ve almost been engaged for a year, you decide to get engagement photos taken. The first reason is that we don’t have any professional photos of the two of us and the second is that we are procrastinators and had been planning on getting photos taken since February.

February. November. Meh.

We got really lucky because there were still some beautiful fall colors at the University of Nevada (my alma mater), but it was freezing. My friend David, who is an amazing professional photojournalist and not a wedding photographer at all (I make that distinction purely for David’s sake. He totally could be a wedding photographer, but from what I understand wedding photographers are kind of low on the totem pole of photographers), took our photos and will be making the trip to St. Croix to capture our Caribbean nuptials. The engagement photos were a good test run.

Travis insists that he doesn’t know how to smile so his sister, Sylvia, came up with a great trick. Every time he would start looking too serious, Syliva would say, “Travis you look like you are constipated.”

I’d like you to think about that when you look at our pictures.

Come on, who doesn’t giggle at the word constipated? Except maybe people who are, in fact, constipated or those who are too sophisticated. You won’t find either of those here.

Anyhoo, click here to check out our photos. I wanted to create a slideshow, Ála Myspace 2004, but I couldn’t find any free, easy slideshow thing-a-ma-jigs.

Awesomely Bad Engagement Photos

Travis and I finally scheduled our engagement photos for November 14. I can’t believe that it took us this long to book them, but gosh life has been busy lately!

I went searching for a little inspiration and came across this site where I got some excellent ideas of what not to do for our photos. Check it out if you need a good laugh!

Engagement Encounter – Day One

We started the Engaged Encounter last night and it went from 6:30 to about 10 p.m.

The format goes something like this:

Couple who has been married for awhile shares their experience on a specific topic.

Priest chimes in with his thoughts on the topic.

We break out individually and write about the topic for 20 minutes.

Then we get back with our mate (the priest’s words, not mine) and discuss the topic together for 20 minutes.

Last night’s topics were called Encounter with Me and Encounter with We. It required a lot of reflection about our families, our self image, and how we perceive romance and disillusionment. It was deep stuff!

We dove right into the deep end and some of it was really hard. It really requires thinking about our relationship in a different way and then trying to communicate how we are feeling.

I have to say that I enjoyed last night, even if I shed a few tears at one point. The couple that was presenting said that they’ve been involved with the Engaged Encounter for 13 years and believe it is one of the few times that a couple can completely focus on their marriage.

Today is the longest day of the weekend. We start at 8 a.m. and end around 10 p.m. The fact that I am up at 5 a.m. is worrying me a little bit, but I’m pretty sure that is what they make coffee for.

Anyway, if I have time I will post about what today brings. The topics are across the board and we should have some interesting conversation.
